(Future) Badger Observer: 2026 walk-on fullback McCoy Smith
This in-state standout did it all for Waunakee to advance to the next round of the WIAA state playoffs. Here's what stood out about the future Wisconsin fullback.

WAUNAKEE, Wis. — A three-play stretch, one each in a different phase of the game, was a microcosm for McCoy Smith’s all-around impact.
Smith, a walk-on commit for the University of Wisconsin football program, worked on the defensive line, at running back and on special teams for Waunakee against De Pere during a WIAA Division 1 Level 3 playoff matchup Friday night. He produced a third-down sack deep in De Pere territory, then blocked the subsequent punt and finished with his second of three touchdowns late in second quarter.
Waunakee went on to win 42-28 over De Pere to advance to face Hartland Arrowhead at Madison Memorial on Friday.
“To be honest, it’s just one play at a time, and I’m just happy the sequence went how it went, and that’s all that matters,” McCoy said.
The (Future) Badger Observer series continues watching and evaluating Wisconsin’s 2026 commits with a look at McCoy and what he could bring to the Badgers. Be sure to go back and read the first several entries of this series that includes breakdowns of wide receivers Jayden Petit, quarterback Ryan Hopkins, linebacker Ben Wenzel, offensive lineman Ben Novak and tight end Jack Janda.
