FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Ryan Hopkins helped secure a season-opening road win in his first start for the nation’s best high school football program.

But the University of Wisconsin quarterback commit wasn’t entirely satisfied with the W.

Hopkins and Santa Ana Mater Dei (California) asserted themselves as the first two quarters progressed against Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (Florida) as they scored four touchdowns by halftime. It became a tale of two halves as the Monarchs stumbled but eventually held on for the 26-23 victory at Brian Piccolo Memorial Stadium during the Broward County National Football Showcase.

“There's a high level of expectation when you wear these stripes, and I felt like we started off not on the right foot,” Hopkins said. “But we kind of picked it up in the first half, and then second half, we really got to execute better than that.

“And to get shut out like that, and the offense gonna get three-and-outs, we gotta fix something. And first game this season, glad we came out with the W but there's a lot to learn and a long season ahead.”

Hopkins finished with 272 yards passing and three touchdowns, according to SportsCenter NEXT.
