Eric Mateos wasn’t the first person Lucas Simmons informed about his commitment to the University of Wisconsin football program.

But it was someone very close to the Badgers’ new offensive line coach.

Simmons, a former consensus four-star recruit, was in town earlier this month for an official visit after entering the transfer portal. There wasn’t any profound flashiness in how he revealed the news of wanting to sign with Wisconsin, and the former Florida State lineman laughed when asked who he told.

“It was right when dinner was done and everybody was leaving,” Simmons said. “I told coach Mateos’ wife, ‘Hey, if you want to let coach Mateos know I’m committing, that’d be awesome.’ So she let him know. He was ecstatic. I mean, he was really, really happy.
