MADISON, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin football program let off the gas a smidge during these last few days of fall camp practice.
Until Sunday.
Wisconsin had players in spider pads and helmets Thursday and Friday following a day off, then went half pack (true shoulder pads and helmets) for a condensed Saturday session that lasted over an hour. Then came a fully-padded Sunday scrimmage on the field just north of Camp Randall Stadium to end the weekend.
“I’m really happy that the guys came out today with a competitive spirit,” Fickell said. They worked, battle with each other. We had some really good things and some things we got to get a lot better. But I was kind of curious in the last couple days with us backing off just a hair bit on the physicality, I was kind of concerned that maybe wouldn’t have the leadership we needed to continue to do what we have to do here the last eight days or so before we really get into game week.
“But I got to give them a lot of credit. The guys came out today, they competed, they led. The guys that couldn’t go today did a really, really good job at affecting their teammates and their buddies. And to me that’s a big part of where this thing’s got to go.”
