MADISON, Wis. — Colton Joseph appeared to have an open receiver for a touchdown, but another one of the University of Wisconsin football team’s offseason transfers had other plans.
Wisconsin worked a period inside the Kellner Family Athletic Center on Thursday where the offense lined up inside the 5-yard line. Joseph threw to his left, where based on the view from the second floor area where media is allowed to observe practice, the receiver appeared to have enough separation for a potential touchdown. But defensive lineman Hammond Russell IV got his right mitt up at the right time to swat the ball, and it floated in the air for a second before Russell tracked it for an interception.
A caravan of first-team defenders then sprinted with him down the right sideline for what could be called a touchdown.
Russell’s been among the first set of defensive linemen up for Wisconsin thus far through the first week of fall camp, and he’s been often paired with fellow upperclassmen Charles Perkins.
“Obviously, a guy like Hammond is a senior guy, a veteran guy that’s got a lot of experience, and he’s very sharp,” defensive line coach E.J. Whitlow said. “He does a good job of kind of really getting the group grounded, focused.
“Being a pro, taking care of your body, the little things off the field. And then Perk does a good job of bringing … that emotional burst and energy that the unit needs.”
