7 takeaways from Wisconsin football's win against Miami (Ohio)
A non-update update on the Badgers' QB1, how his backup played, and a dominant defensive effort.

MADISON, Wis. — It was a season-opening victory for the University of Wisconsin football program, but yet again, the team needed to turn to a backup quarterback with the game undecided.
Billy Edwards Jr. left in the second quarter and didn’t return to Wisconsin’s eventual 17-0 win Thursday over Miami (Ohio) due to what the program described as a lower body injury. He was seen on the sidelines in street clothes without assistance walking, and he was interacting with his teammates during the second half.
Tanner Mordecai missed time during the 2023 season due to a broken hand, and Tyler Van Dyke was lost for the season after he suffered a leg injury several plays into Wisconsin’s home loss to Alabama last year. Braedyn Locke, who is now at Arizona, replaced both Mordecai and Van Dyke during those seasons.
“Don't know a whole lot,” Fickell said about Edwards. “Good to see though, that he was back out there, able to be a part of the game, and be with our team and things like that.
“So hopefully that's a really good sign for things moving forward, but we won't have any updates right now.”
Here are seven takeaways as Wisconsin (1-0) now has over a week to prepare for Middle Tennessee State.
