What stood out from new Wisconsin athletic director Shawn Eichorst in recent availabilities
A lot to already digest from Wisconsin's new athletic director before his formal introduction Tuesday.
It’ll be a busy week for Shawn Eichorst with the media after being named University of Wisconsin athletic director.
Wisconsin announced the hire July 1, and Eichorst quickly spoke to a small group of reporters later that day. He also jumped on the airwaves of ESPN Wisconsin’s “Wilde and Tausch” on Monday, and he’ll formally be introduced in a ceremony and news conference Tuesday.
Badger Observer will be there at Wisconsin’s facilities Tuesday for that event, so expect video and further content this week. But we obtained from a Wisconsin spokesperson that 33-minute conversation Eichorst had with said small group of reporters last week, and the full availability on Wilde and Tausch is also seen below.
Here’s what stood out from those first two media availabilities.
There’s a genuine enthusiasm from Eichorst
It was heard in the audio during his opening remarks last week, where he used variations of the word “honor” twice within a 40-second span during his opening remarks to reporters last week. But it felt like you really heard it on Wilde and Tausch to start the week (and seen if you watch the show on YouTube).
The Wisconsin roots are deep for Eichorst, who’s hometown is just about 50 minutes from Madison in Lone Rock, according to Google Maps. He played at UW-Whitewater, where he later became athletic director, and studied law at Marquette. Then of course came his time actually in Madison, where he held senior associate athletic director, executive associate athletic director and deputy athletic director duties over a five-year period under Barry Alvarez.
